Mount Rinjani Trekking Guide — Segara Anak Lake & Volcano Adventures in Lombok
The Rinjani Ecopark — The mighty Gunung Rinjani towers over Lombok. At 3,726 meters it is Indonesia's second-highest peak. A climb to the summit is widely regarded as one of the best views in the country, with lush forests, waterfalls, and the breathtaking Segara Anak crater lake below the rim.
Part of the famous ring of fire, Gunung Rinjani holds spiritual significance for local people. Within the mountain sits Segara Anak, a crescent-shaped sulfur lake 600 meters below the crater rim, with Mt. Baru rising from its waters. Mt Rinjani lies within Gunung Rinjani National Park — 41,330 hectares inside the Wallacea bio-geographical transition zone, established in 1997.
The Rinjani Trek is managed by National Park officials, the Lombok tourism industry, and community representatives. Revenue from trekking fees supports conservation, trail maintenance, and the Rinjani Trek Center (Senaru) and Rinjani Information Center (Sembalun Lawang).
Gunung Rinjani National Park covers 41,330 hectares on Lombok island, Indonesia.
Segara Anak is about 6 km across at its widest point — a spiritual place for Balinese and Wetu Telu pilgrims.
At 3,726 m, Rinjani is the second highest volcano in Indonesia — dominating the landscape of Lombok.
Starting from the Rinjani Trek Centre in Sembalun, the climb to Plawangan II at 2,638 m takes about 8 hours via POS I, POS II, and POS III — the preferred route for summit attempts.
Recommended Trekking Operator — book Rinjani trekking through official park channels and community-run cooperatives in Senaru and Sembalun.
This is the most used route for a less strenuous trek to the crater rim. You start at 600 m in Senaru and reach Plawangan I at the crater edge — ideal for rim-only trekking.
Explore waterfalls around the slopes of Rinjani. Use caution with local guides — official park guides are recommended for waterfall visits near Senaru.
Led by local guides, this easy half-day walk explores the foothills of Rinjani in Bayan district — starting near the border of Gunung Rinjani National Park.
The final ascent begins in darkness. Headlamps trace a line of light up the scree until the sun erupts over Lombok, Bali, and the ocean.
Authentic mountain camps where warm meals and dry tents await after hours on the trail. Rest well — tomorrow the summit calls.
Gateway through golden savanna grasslands. Wake to dew on your tent and the summit visible on the horizon.
Crater rim camp at 2,639m — watch clouds pour into the caldera like a slow waterfall at sunset.
Forest-edge camp with panoramic views of the lake far below. Fall asleep to the sound of distant waterfalls.
Rainforest village gateway. Moss-covered roots, bird calls, and the promise of the crater above.
Real stories from trekkers who felt the cold summit wind and the warmth of Segara Anak at dawn.
I closed my laptop on Friday. By Sunday sunrise I was on Rinjani's summit with tears in my eyes. The cold wind, the crater lake far below — I finally understood why they call this mountain sacred.
Segara Anak at dawn changed something in me. I could smell pine forest, feel warmth from the hot springs, and see stars reflected in the lake. It felt like the mountain was breathing with me.
The final push in darkness, then light exploding over the ocean — I still get goosebumps. This site made me feel the trail before I even laced my boots.
